Wow, that is cool. It really illustrates packaging and also why that car is a handful. Or just, cars like that in general.

Those Lamborghini V12 cars have the
weirdest MR layout.

getting the power from that front mounted trans to the rear of the engine appears to be a lot of the bulk of this whole setup.

When I was a kid, I was huge into building 1/24 model cars. Testor’s made made a super-detailed version of this car. At one point in the building process, you end up building the entire engine and transmission and it looks just like that.

I guess the intention was to have a direct connection between the shifter and the transmission rather than with linkages and/or cables.

Ah, that’s the one thing I miss about building model cars. You sometimes get intimate information of a car you otherwise would not have, as all the naughty bits are usually hiding under the bodyworks.

I had that kit too! I remember when I started
putting together the chassis thinking that a tubular space frame made it seem cheap, but later realized that it wouldn't make economic sense to set up the tooling for a unibody frame for such a low-volume car.

Nah, i
t’s just a shaft that runs back through the sump to the diff.

It also puts more weight in the middle of the car, and allows for a shorter rear overhang.

Probably a similar center of gravity as this, just longer :

Interesting way to get that weight distribution which they still use on their V12 cars today. Plus side, seems like it would make maintenance easier than if the belts and accessories were in the front on a firewall.

Seems like a worse way to do it.
You either have direct shifting with crazy redirected drive. Or direct drive with crazy redirected shifting.
Redirecting drive seems harder since it's far more powerful. Also more likely to affect performance and reliability. For what? A better shift feel?
